The Trans Health Symposium
The Trans Health Symposium hopes to break barriers by providing in-depth, hands on, comprehensive training for both providers and community members around transgender and non-binary health and wellness. This includes focus on physical health, mental health and social welfare.
Queer Works is located in Los Angeles, CA and is a 501c (3) organization that aims to provide affordable, accessible and affirming mental health care for the LGBTQ+ population by providing access to low-cost clinicians and development and workshops for providers and the community.
Queer Works believes that holistic knowledge around medical procedures, mental health and social welfare services for clinicians working with the transgender population is key and helps clinicians in all capacities to better instill resilience and autonomy in their clients. This is the main influence for the creation of the symposium.
The Transgender Health Symposium will be a virtual program, held February 6-7, 2021. The symposium is broken up into two parts:
- ·Day one is curated for mental health, medical health and social welfare providers and aimed to inform and educate about the specific needs of the transgender and non-binary (TGNB) community. Providers can instill empowerment onto patients/clients around transition and identity by providing knowledge around medical procedures, mental health services and social welfare options. Our learning objectives are influenced by this notion.
- Day two invites providers and TGNB individuals to gather together virtually to gain knowledge about specialized medical procedures and self-care techniques. Day two will also hold a virtual recruitment fair and opportunities for informational interviews for TGNB individuals to learn about jobs in the medical, mental health and social welfare fields.
